The Victorian Government Library Service (VGLS) delivered by the Shared Service Provider (SSP) is the sole provider of library services to VPS staff and provides a range of relevant information resources, services and advice for VPS staff by:
•    Providing access to high quality information resources and research services;
•    providing an efficient information request service;
•    assisting your decision making and day to day work practices; and
•    partnering in the development of best practice in the Victorian public sector.

What are the benefits of a whole of Victorian Government Library Service?

What resources does the library provide access to?
The library provides access to over 420,000 print resources, in excess of 11,000 electronic documents and thousands of full text and abstracted online journals, ebooks, legal resources, standards and more. Print resources and our electronic document library resources are listed in the library catalogue.

What training does the library provide?
The library runs orientation sessions for a general overview of library services. Targeted training sessions in resource discovery, legal research and specific databases are also offered. We can also assist you in the use of citation software and setting up alerts.

How do I search the library collections?
Simple and advanced search options are available at the top of the library gateway page. By searching “Everything” and “All fields” you will locate all items referencing your search term in the library catalogue, the electronic document collection and online resource collections.
Your search can be refined by adding limits available in the advanced search page or by applying delimiters such as date or material type on the search results pages.
Note: Catalogue results display under the “catalogue search results ” tab. Online resource results display under the “database search results ” tab.

How do I register to use the library?
You will need to register twice for full access to all library resources.
•    The library registration creates your Library Account, allowing you to borrow and renew loans and create and save lists of resources.
•    The Open Athens registration creates the authentication allowing you to access online resources.
Follow the two links in the “Register” box on the library gateway to register for full access to all library resources.

What is “My library account ”?
My library account:
-    contains your mailing address and contact details
-    allows you to change your PIN
-    allows you to change your Username
-    allows you to set preferences for how your account information is displayed and for saved lists
-    allows you to view your current loans  and renew them
-    allows you to view your current requests  and suspend or cancel them
To update your mailing address or contact details, please contact  the library by phone or email

Why is full text not available for some resources?
You have online access to a range of journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, newspapers, standards and legal resources. These are provided by a variety of publishers and the content and subscription access varies. Some databases only provide abstracts while others may have an embargo period for recent publications.
If you are unable to access a listed resource or are unable to access full text when it should be available, please email  with details of the problem.

How do I borrow library resources?
After locating the item you want in the library catalogue, click on the request item button. (If you are not already logged in to your Library Account you will be prompted to log ln at this point.) In the new pop up window, click on “place hold(s)”  then “OK”
Your requested item will be sent out to you, usually arriving the next business day. When you have finished with the borrowed item, simply send it back to the library using the attached mailing label.
To check on the progress of your request, go to “my library account ” on the library gateway and select the “holds ” tab to view all your requests. Requests may also be cancelled from this screen.
Please note: We may recall a loan if another library patron requests it.

How do I renew my library loan?
Loans are usually for 28 days. If you need the item for longer, most items can be renewed for a further 28 days. Interlibrary loans or items required by other library patrons cannot be renewed online.
To renew a loan, go to “my library account ” on the library gateway, select the “checkouts ” tab, select the item to be renewed and click on the “renew” button.

Can I get access to resources not held by the library?
We can obtain items from other library services across Australia or worldwide. If you are unable to locate a book or article through the library gateway, use the 'Request an article or loan' form.

How do I get research assistance?
We can assist you with reference and research advice. Complete the 'Need help? Ask Us!' library form for all your information requirements, giving as much detail as possible.
If you have an urgent request, please complete the form then contact the library by phone on 1800 742 733 (Option 2).

Can I ask a librarian a question outside business hours?
The Victorian Government Library located on 607 Sneydes Rd, Werribee 3030 is staffed between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm on business days.
Use the 'Need help? Ask Us!' form to ask a question 24/7 and we will reply promptly.

How do I obtain an ISBN or ISSN number?
Fill out the details on our 'request an ISBN' form and an ISBN  will be supplied usually within 24 hours.
ISSN numbers for serial publications are provided by an external body and can take up to 72 hours to supply.
